Everyone makes mistakes, and almost every mistake can be forgiven. The fact is, however, mistakes steal from our credibility, no matter how honest or trivial. It is not fair, but it is a fact of life. It may be as simple as a spelling error in a presentation, or as serious as sending out a defective product. Each error takes away a little bit of our reputation and our sales. A homeowner will not discuss the 19 perfect windows in his house, but he will certainly tell the entire neighborhood about the one that sticks. We all know this and accept this responsibility. Paying attention to detail is the best weapon against these thieves.
More and more each day, our business speeds up, and the distractions around us grow. Our phones, our computers, and our tablets send out a continuous string of bleeps and rings and bings to let us know the latest on our best friend’s cat or the most recent political controversy. Our devices want our attention and our ‘eyeballs.’ All of which takes our focus away from the important tasks we need to do. And Facebook refuses to take the blame for the errors in our work! It will always be up to us to maintain focus.
I did some research and thought I would share with you some tips we can use to fight the common enemy and to ensure we get our work done correctly:
1. GET ORGANIZED – Make a schedule and record your meetings and deadlines for the day, week, and month.
2. MAKE LISTS – At the beginning of each day, write down the things you need to do that day and later that week (a quick thank you to Lee Smith – I still use the list template you gave me – as you say, ‘either you run the day or the day runs you’).
3. KEEP A SCHEDULE – Try to get to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning.
4. LIMIT DISTRACTIONS – If possible, work in an area that allows you to focus. Put your phone on silent and ask your friends and family to only call you in case of emergency.
5. DON’T MULTITASK – Do one thing at a time (this one is a big problem for me)!
6. EXERCISE – This is one is a good one. It settles your mind and generates good, consistent energy for the rest of the day.
7. TAKE BREAKS – That’s right, if you want to get more done and do it well, then work less by taking scheduled breaks at about the same time each day (around 10 or 15 minutes should do it).
I like this list, especially the last two. You have a special responsibility for your own career and we all have a special responsibility to provide our customers excellent products. We can fulfill both responsibilities by paying attention to the small things.
